Stay Hydrated this Winter
Especially with the cold, dry winter air, it can be hard to keep one's skin, hair and lips hydrated Here are a few tips to stay smooth and soft, this winter:
- Drink lots of water! You should always drink water, but especially in the winter time. A great way to ensure you drink lots of water is to carry around a water bottle in your bag or purse. Drinking water from a water bottle makes you want to drink more water without even realizing it, and for those of us who don't like the taste of water fountain or unfiltered water, then you can bu a water bottle with a filter in it.
- Steam is your friend. Take a steam bath or put your face over a warm bowl of water with a towel over your head to lock in the steam, so your pores can open up. Then once you are done with this, immediately apply moisturizer, ensuring that your skin soaks up the moisturizer before it has a chance to dry out. Another option is to keep a humidifier in your room because having that extra bit of moisture in the air prevents your skin from being as prone to dryness or flakiness.
- Take shorter showers. If this is an impossibile task for you then instead take a warm shower as opposed to a hot shower. This is because a hot shower in the wintertime can break blood vessels and over-strip your body of its naturals oils, leading to even more dry skin.
- Protect your lips and hands. These areas tend to get forgotten when people run through their skin care routines. With the air becoming drier during the winter, your hands and lips are more exposed then the rest of your body and can get dry and cracked. Always keep a lip balm and hand moisturizer in your bag. Just having those two things in your bag makes you more aware of your dry lips and hands, resulting in you using those products. Look for products that are oil-based (including avocado oil, neem oil, reship seed oil) instead of water based because water based products can actually freeze inside of your skin which just causes more damage and leaving your skin vulnerable to cold weather.
- Exfoliate! Exfoliating is essential to keeping smooth, hydrated skin. During the winter, our skin can get flaky and dry. Using a light exfoliater about two to three times a week can get rid of dead skin cells and allow new cell turnover. However make sure that immediately after you exfoliate, that you moisturize.
- Never leave the house with wet hair. When you expose your hair to cold weather it can cause damage to the ends, leaving your hair tangled and parched. Also, don't put your hair in a pony tail when it is still wet, because it can actually cause damage and flaking to your scalp as well as you hair because wet hair is more prone to breakage. Using leave in conditioners can help with any breakage as well as making it easier to comb out your hair in colder conditions.
Hope these tips will help you keep your skin smooth and hydrated this winter.
Until next time,
Parker
